Prof. Eric Freedman Quoted in The Wall Street Journal on ‘Muddled’ Law in Sphere of Liability of U.S. Military Defense Contractors
Professor Eric M. Freedman was quoted in Brent Kendall’s January 10, 2013 article “Contractor’s Torture Settlement a Milestone” printed inThe Wall Street Journal. The article discusses the potential legal perils that U.S. defense contractors face in light of a recent multi-million dollar settlement paid out to torture victims in Abu Ghraib prison, as well as various cases against defense contractors that are, or have been, winding their way through the federal court system.
Kendall writes, “Legal observers said the settlement is the latest sign that the law remains unclear on when and whether contractors can face lawsuits seeking monetary damages for alleged wrongdoing in a combat zone. ‘I don’t think it’s a deep insight to say the law is still significantly muddled,’ said Hofstra University law professor Eric Freedman.”
