Professors Stefan Krieger, Serge Martinez Publish Article on Election Day 2008 and Teaching Storytelling
Professors Stefan H. Krieger and Serge A. Martinez recently published their article, A Tale of Election Day 2008: Teaching Storytelling Through Repeated Experiences.
This article describes our experience supervising several clinic students on election day 2008 as they represented voters who had been turned away at the polls as the voters sought judicial orders allowing them to vote in the historic election. We noticed significant and rapid improvement in our students’ advocacy, particularly their storytelling abilities, while representing multiple clients over the course of a single day. The article analyzes our students’ rapid progress through the lens of recent cognitive science research, which suggests the importance of repeated opportunities for practice in development of proficiency. The article concludes by suggesting ways that the educational experiences our students had on election day might be incorporated into other clinical settings.
