As the number of authorized and unauthorized immigrants in the United States continues to rise, immigration issues increasingly permeate family court proceedings. Our interest is based on two major considerations: (1) immigration issues are becoming more and more pervasive in the lives of parents and children in court; and (2) the immigration legal community and family law legal community do not know each other well. Our hope is that raising and discussing these issues will begin a vitally important dialogue between them, a dialogue in which we invite the New York legal community to participate through this column.
