On April 8, 2014, more than 40 Hofstra Moot Court Board students and alumni gathered for the annual Alumni Reception at the Manhattan office of Baker & Hostetler LLP. The event, which celebrated the organization’s accomplishments this past academic year, was hosted by alumnus Marc D. Powers ’80, a partner at the firm and a member of the Dean’s Advisory Board.
For only the second time in its history, the Moot Court Board wrote the problem for both the fall and spring intramural competitions held on campus.
Damian Racanelli 3L, who was in charge of writing the problems, was honored with the Barbara Lukeman ’00 Award during the reception for his outstanding efforts. Lukeman, a partner at Nixon Peabody LLP and a member of the Hofstra Law Alumni Association executive board, was on hand to present Racanelli with the award.
“Damian brought professionalism and integrity to the two projects,” said Professor Barbara Barron, the faculty advisor to the Moot Court Board. “The guest judges who presided over both competitions were duly impressed with the problems, the level of sophistication and the complexity of the issues.”
The event also recognized Hofstra Law’s participation in six interscholastic moot court competitions this year and the alumni coaches who have given their time to prepare the competitors. Hofstra Law teams have earned several awards for their performances — including Best Overall Team honors at the tri-state regional round of the National Moot Court Competition in November 2013 — placing them among the top-ranked teams in the nation.
“Our alumni have been such an invaluable resource to our members over the years — they have provided professional mentorships, served as coaches for our interscholastic competition teams and contributed, through support and encouragement, to our overall experience in the world of oral advocacy,” said Hanaiya Gholson 3L, director of alumni affairs for the board. “The Moot Court Board has been fortunate enough to have such an inspiring and enriching alumni base, and we look forward to continuing to build greater relationships with our alumni for years to come.”
