On May 16, 2014, Hofstra Law alumnus Louis A. Scarcella ’77 was sworn in as a U.S. bankruptcy judge for the Eastern District of New York.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Thurgood Marshall United States Courthouse in New York. Chief Circuit Judge Robert Katzmann administered the oath.
Before his appointment, Judge Scarcella was a partner at Farrell Fritz in the bankruptcy & creditors’ rights group, where he represented both debtors and creditors.
His practice included in-court and out-of-court restructurings, the rehabilitation of financially troubled companies, and bankruptcy litigation. He regularly represented corporate debtors, trustees, creditors’ committees, insurance companies, lenders and other financial institutions, as well as parties seeking to purchase the assets of, or invest in, financially troubled companies.
Judge Scarcella is sitting in Central Islip, and his chambers and courtroom are on the seventh floor.
