Prof. Alafair Burke Teaches in Department of Justice’s Discovery Bootcamp for Prosecutors

Alafair S. Burke, Professor of Law and Hofstra Research Fellow

Professor Alafair Burke on April 7, 2016, spoke at the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.

Her presentation, “Lessons from Cognitive Science: The Effect of Heuristics on Prosecutorial Discretion,” was an invited contribution to the curriculum at the Department of Justice’s Discovery Bootcamp for new assistant U.S. attorneys, focused on discovery in criminal cases.

Professor Burke’s lecture focused on the cognitive reasons why well-intentioned prosecutors might overlook potentially exculpatory evidence, such as selective information processing and recall.
